What Is RFID (Charging Authorisation)?
RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) is the contactless-card technology used to authorise users at charging stations. The user starts charging by holding their assigned card to the device; a session cannot be opened without the card being read, so only authorised people can use the station. Besides preventing unauthorised use in public areas, workplaces, residential complexes and vehicle fleets, this method ties each charging session to a specific card (and therefore to a person or department). This record makes it possible to report consumption per user and share costs correctly; in OCPP-compatible systems, authorisation can also be managed through the central management software. Bemis's smart (OCPP-compatible) models support authorisation with RFID. For example, in a residential-complex car park a card is assigned to each resident; this way an outsider cannot use the station, and each household's energy consumption is reported separately so that dues or bills are shared fairly. In a workplace fleet, cards are assigned to departments so it is easy to track how much charge each vehicle has taken.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does RFID do in charging?
RFID provides contactless-card user authorisation at charging stations. The user starts charging by holding their card to the device; a session cannot be opened without the card being read, so only authorised people use the station. This prevents unauthorised use in public areas, residential complexes and fleets.
Can consumption be reported per person with RFID?
Yes. RFID ties each charging session to a specific card (a person or department); this record makes it possible to report consumption per user and share costs. In OCPP-compatible systems, authorisation is managed from the central software. Bemis's smart models support RFID.
